Modesto : Childen's Book Drive (Gold)
|date:||April 8, 2017|
|time:||8am - 12:30pm|
Stanislaus READS! is a multi-agency, multi-year effort to uncover many winning solutions to help children read – and succeed – by third grade..
In Stanislaus County, over 70% of third grade students are not reading at grade level. Research shows that third grade reading proficiency is a major predictor of future student success. By the end of third grade, students shift from learning to read to reading to learn. To master the more complex subject matter they encounter in the fourth grade curriculum, students must have a solid foundation in reading. Students who fail to reach this critical milestone are at a higher risk for dropping out of high school, teenage pregnancy and incarceration.
Since January 2014, Stanislaus Community Foundation (SCF)—in partnership with Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE), SCOE's Head Start program, The Children and Families Commission, Stanislaus County Libraries and five school districts has convened a broad base of stakeholders in the public, private, civic, philanthropic, and faith communities to formalize a plan to improve early literacy rates in our region.
One key strategy of Stanislaus READS! is to increase children’s access to books. We know that 61 percent of children from low income households have zero children's books available in their homes. Having books in the home has been proven to improve a child's reading performance and general attitude toward reading and learning.
To help get books into the hands of local children and families, the Boy Scouts of America Greater Yosemite Council is partnering with Stanislaus READS! to help organize a county-wide Children’s Book Drive. Modeled after Scouting for Food, local troops will work with residents and businesses to collect new and gently used children’s books during the weeks prior to Love Modesto on April 8. Donated books will then be distributed to families through Stanislaus READS! strategic partners, including health clinics, family resource centers, and schools.
The Boy Scout’s goal for 2017 is to collect 10,000 children’s books.
